Vanillylmandelic Acid (VMA)


For a period of 2-3 days prior to sample collection, as well as during the collection period, you must NOT take:

  • Medications which may interfere with catecholamines and their metabolites, including amphetamines and amphetamine-like compounds, appetite suppressants, bromocriptine, buspirone, caffeine, chlorpromazine, clonidine, disulfiram, diuretics (in doses sufficient to deplete sodium), epinepherine, glucagon, guanethidine, histamine, hydrazine derivatives, imipramine, levdope (L-dopa, Sinemet), lithium, MAO inhibitors, melatonin, methyodopa (Aldomet), morphine, nitroglycerine, nose drops, propafenone (Rythmol), radiographic agents, rauwolfia alkaloids (Reserpine), and vasodilators. Continue to take prescribed medications unless your doctor instructs otherwise. If you have any questions regarding your medications, contact your physician. 
  • Two days prior to and during the test period, avoid alcohol, coffee, tea, tobacco (including the nicotine patch), bananas, citrus fruits and vanilla; and the medications Monoamine Oxidase and Alpha Methyl Ldopa (aldomet).
  • Excessive exercise during the duration of this test can significantly elevate the results.
