New surgical team brings latest in techniques and procedures

Santa Cruz County heart patients who require complex cardiac surgeries do not need to travel for treatment, since surgeons from an esteemed medical group in Central California serve Dominican Hospital’s Cardiac Surgery program.

Robert Stewart, MD, heads the team of surgeons with extensive surgical experience in the latest innovative surgical techniques and procedures.

Open-heart surgery is not new to Dominican Hospital. Cardiac surgeons have been operating on patients at Dominican Hospital since 1989.

The new surgeons are from the Valley Cardiac Surgery Medical Group in Fresno, which conducts about 1,200 cardiac surgeries annually at two major hospitals in Fresno. The other surgeons, Drs. Peter Birnbaum, Pervaiz Chaudhry and Richard Gregory, split their time between Dominican Hospital and Valley Cardiac Surgery's main office in Fresno, to backup Dr. Stewart. Together, they provide Dominican Hospital with coverage 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Along with repairing aortic dissections, Dr. Stewart and his colleagues can perform valve repairs, aortic root replacements, aneurysm repairs, off pump coronary bypass surgery, and other complicated procedures. Until their arrival, patients requiring those surgeries had to travel out of the area for treatment.
