8/20/10 New, collaborative system saves lives on the Central Coast
In order to help local residents have the best odds of surviving—and thriving—after a cardiac arrest, three local agencies are teaming up. Dominican Hospital, Watsonville Hospital and emergency medical responders throughout the county are working together to ensure that individuals with suspected heart attacks are brought to Dominican’s cardiac catheterization lab quickly.
8/5/10 Chief of Med Staff now Cancer Liaison
Jimmy Y. Chung, MD, chief of Dominican Hospital's medical staff, is racking up the achievements. Earlier this year, Dr. Chung performed the Central Coast's first single-port laparoscopic colectomy at Dominican Hospital. Dr. Chung has also recently received a three-year appointment as Cancer Liaison Physician for the cancer program at Dominican Hospital.
7/28/10 Corrine Niven, RN, earns Dominican Hospital’s ninth DAISY award
Corrine Niven, RN, has earned Dominican Hospital's ninth DAISY award. Corrine was recognized by a patient's wife for the care she provided in Dominican's intensive care unit.
7/12/10 Local club donates ‘twin bed’ to Dominican Hospital’s NICU
The Santa Cruz Mothers of Twins Club has donated a neonatal cribette to Dominican Hospital's Level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
6/11/10 Local physicians award scholarships to 16 students
Members of the Pteron Society, a philanthropic organization through Dominican Hospital Foundation, have awarded 16 local high school students a total of $7,500 in scholarships.
6/2/10 Local attorney named chair of Dominican Hospital board
Santa Cruz attorney Edison Jensen has been named chair of Dominican Hospital’s board of directors. His tenure begins July 1.
5/5/10 Landmark drug trial underway at Dominican Hospital
Two Dominican Hospital physicians are working to save lives locally and around the world from one of nature’s most deadly poisons. Todd Mitchell, MD, MPH and Alan Buchwald, MD, are the Principal and co-Investigators of the first FDA sanctioned clinical trial of a comprehensive protocol for treating patients with amatoxin mushroom poisoning.
3/18/10 Dominican therapists head to Haiti
Two therapists from Dominican Hospital will travel to Haiti to work with victims of the recent earthquake. Mary Anne Kramer-Urner, physical therapist, leaves for the Haiti on March 20 with Physicians for Peace. Cheryl Bencala, an occupational therapist and certified hand therapist, will return to Haiti for the second time in as many months in mid-April with the Enoch Choi Foundation.
3/9/10 Katinka Hurley, RN, earns Dominican Hospital’s seventh DAISY award
Katinka Hurley, RN, has earned Dominican Hospital's seventh DAISY award. She was recognized by a patient's wife for her ability to put them at ease in the Acute Rehabilitation Unit.
2/16/10 Dominican named CCS Pediatric Community Hospital
Dominican Hospital has received Children's Medical Services (CMS)/California Children's Services (CCS) full approval as a CCS Pediatric Community Hospital.

Thanks to Dominican Hospital and Catholic Healthcare West (CHW), eight local health and human-services agencies will receive $134,000 in CHW Community Benefits Grants for 2010.
1/8/10 Dominican Hospital goes smoke-free
For nearly 70 years, Dominican Hospital has been working hard to keep the focus on health in Santa Cruz County. That's why, as of Jan. 1, 2010, Dominican Hospital and Dominican Rehabilitation Services is completely smoke-free. Smoking is not be permitted anywhere on the grounds at either facility.
